What Are Bio-Identical Hormones (BHRT)?
From metabolism to our mood, hormones affect every aspect of how our body functions. As we age, our hormones decline and fall out of balance, resulting in troubling symptoms including fatigue, hot flashes, low sex drive, weight gain, mood swings and depression. Fortunately, help is available to restore hormonal balance and well-being with bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) at Thrive®Health Solutions.
What Is BHRT?
BHRT (Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy) uses natural hormones and not the synthetic forms (and side-effects) that are found in traditional HRT (hormone replacement therapy). All-natural bio-identical hormones are a precise biochemical match to your own hormones. This means they can be easily absorbed and processed by the body.
Hormone Replacement Therapy is a medical treatment focused on replenishing a person’s decreasing hormone levels. As we age, these hormone levels lessen. In women, estrogen and progesterone levels can drop significantly due to menopause. Decreases in testosterone can affect women as well. In men, declining testosterone is the main problem.
Declining hormone levels can cause many symptoms including, but not limited to:
- Fatigue and Loss of Energy
- Trouble Sleeping (Insomnia)
- Feeling Anxious, Moody, Depressed or Unhappy
- Difficulty concentrating, Diminished Mental Acuity and Memory Fog
- Increased Fatty Weight, Especially at the Waist, Hips and Thighs
- Difficulty Losing Weight
- Loss of Muscle Strength and Tone
- Pain in Joints or Muscles
- Night Sweats, Hot Flashes
- Lack of sexual desire/Inability to reach orgasm

Pellet Therapy for Women:
Hormone pellets have been shown to be very effective in improving sex drive, sexual response and performance, relieving menopausal symptoms, improving bone density, restoring sleep patterns, improving depression, anxiety, irritability, and mood swings.
Pellet Therapy for Men:
Testosterone levels begin to decline in men starting in their early 30’s. Most men need to be tested around age 45. Symptoms decreasing testosterone in men include fatigue, loss of mental acuity, loss of libido, and difficulty achieving, or sustaining erection.
Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy Process
After your initial consultation, we perform an in-depth evaluation. This includes an analysis of your health history and bloodwork results. With careful consideration of your needs and goals, we will devise a personalized BHRT plan for you.Once your BHRT plan is in effect for a period of time, we will bring you back for a follow-up and repeated testing to assess your progress. Additionally, these scheduled check-ins ensure your safety and allow for the fine-tuning of your treatment based upon changes in diet, work, sleep, health, and stress. It is typical for patients to receive pellets every three to four months for women and every five to six months for men.
How Is BHRT Administered?
We administer BHRT by placing pellets in your upper hip/butt area. BHRT pellets are placed under the skin of the gluteal area through a tiny incision, and continually release a small but steady stream of hormones into the bloodstream. Unlike traditional injected, oral and transdermal forms of “HRT” therapy – which can vary in how well they are absorbed and produce many undesirable side-effects– pelleting provides sustained, well-absorbed hormone levels throughout the day, for up to 4 months in women and up to 6 months in Men, with consistent dosing and high treatment efficacy. A compounding pharmacist, using strict federal guidelines, compounds the testosterone and estradiol utilized in the pellets. These pellets, are about the size of a tic-tac or smaller. The implantation procedure is easily performed in the office and takes about 15 minutes.
Does Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy Hurt?
On the contrary. BHRT is administered under the skin with tiny pellets. It is a simple procedure to administer BHRT, and we take every precaution to ensure your comfort. We use lidocaine to numb the area prior to insertion to alleviate any pain.
Is BHRT For Me If I Am Still Having Periods?
Yes, there are many women who experience fatigue and low libido to name a few symptoms who when replaced with the right hormones like testosterone notice a huge improvement in their symptoms.
What if my doctor or gynecologist says that there is ‘no data’ to support the use of pellet implants?
It’s about a patient making an informed choice. Researched and developed since 1939 in the US and Europe, there is a myriad of data to support the ‘long term’ safety and efficacy of hormones delivered by pellet implants. BHRT hormone pellet therapy has been used in 5 continents and has been studied for over 80 years. There are hundreds of studies available to practitioners with regards to the benefits and efficacy of BHRT testosterone and estradiol hormone pellet therapy. Unfortunately most practitioners have not read them and base their opinions solely on one or a few traditional “HRT” studies. Currently in the US, there are many physicians still opposed to BHRT estrogen and testosterone related hormone pellet therapy, based on traditional “HRT” studies. For instance, one commonly quoted study called the Women’s Health Initiative, showed a small increased risk of breast cancer in women who were treated with medroxyprogesterone (a synthetic HRT), which has been shown in other studies to increase risk of breast cancer. Recent studies regarding BHRT testosterone and estradiol hormone pelleting specifically however show no clear increase risk of cancer or cardiovascular disease. In fact, numerous recent studies on BHRT testosterone and estradiol hormone pellet replacement show a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease and hormone related cancers in men and women. Furthermore, low testosterone levels in both men and women are associated with a higher occurrence of cancer and disease of many types.
